  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons glycerin
  • 1/4 teaspoon sodium benzoate

Instructions

Combine the sassafras root bark, wintergreen leaves, birch bark, and sarsaparilla root in a large bowl. Mix well until the ingredients are evenly distributed.

In a small bowl, mix together the ground ginger, whole cloves, and whole allspice.

Add this spice blend to the bowl with the herbs and stir until well combined. In a large pot, combine the brown sugar, light corn syrup, and water.

Place the pot over medium heat, stirring until the sugar has dissolved.

Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove the pot from the heat and let it cool slightly.

Strain the syrup into a large bowl to remove any impurities.

Add the dried orange peel and dried lemon peel to the syrup and stir until well combined. Let the mixture cool completely, then stir in the glycerin and sodium benzoate.

Strain the mixture through a cheesecloth or coffee filter into a clean container.
