Ready Time

2 hrs

Yields

4 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk, at room temperature
  • Red food coloring, for desired shade
  • Confectioners’ sugar, for dusting

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Set aside. In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.

Beat in the eggs one at a time, making sure each egg is fully incorporated before adding the next.

Beat in the vanilla extract. Gradually mix in the flour mixture until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

Add the milk and mix until the dough comes together.

Add a few drops of red food coloring to tint the dough, mixing until the color is evenly distributed. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead a few times until it comes together.

Roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch thickness.

Cut out hearts using a cookie cutter or a knife. Place the hearts on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch of space between each cookie.

Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.

Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Dust the cooled cookies with confectioners’ sugar and serve.

Notes

Use high-quality, fresh ingredients, especially the unsalted butter, to ensure the best flavor and texture.

Make sure to room temperature the eggs and milk to ensure easy mixing and incorporation.

Don’t overmix the dough, as this will result in tough cookies.

If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour.

If it’s too dry, add a little more milk.

To achieve the perfect red shade, start with a few drops of food coloring and add more as needed.

Chill the dough for 30 minutes if you find it too soft to work with.

Bake the cookies until they’re lightly golden, but still soft in the center, as they’ll continue to firm up as they cool.

If you don’t have confectioners’ sugar, you can also dust the cookies with granulated sugar or omit it altogether.

These cookies are perfect for Valentine’s Day or any time you want to show someone you care!
