Red Hearts

Red Hearts are a classic Valentines Day treat. They are simple to make and only require a few ingredients. This recipe is for a traditional Red Heart, but feel free to get creative with the decorating!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • several drops red food coloring

Instructions

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract. Mix in the buttermilk and baking soda. Gradually add in the flour, mixing until everything is well combined.

Divide the dough into two portions. To one portion, add enough red food coloring to achieve your desired shade of pink or red. Stir until evenly mixed. Wrap each portion of dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 40 to 60 minutes.

When you’re ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface and cut out hearts with cookie cutters. Sprinkle with sugar before placing on baking sheets lined with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Bake for 11 minutes, or until lightly golden brown around the edges do not overbake! Let cool on wire racks before serving
