Yields
9 servings
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, softened
- 3 3/4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 2-3 tablespoons whole milk or heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer until it’s light and fluffy. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar to the bowl, beating continuously until smooth and creamy.
Add the whole milk or heavy cream, a tablespoon at a time, until the frosting reaches your desired consistency.
You may not need all of the milk or cream, so add it slowly. Beat in the pure vanilla extract and a pinch of salt until fully incorporated.
Continue beating the frosting for an additional 2-3 minutes, until it’s smooth, creamy, and pale in color.
Use the frosting immediately, or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Bring the frosting to room temperature before using.
This frosting recipe yields 9 servings, perfect for topping a standard-sized cake or 9 cupcakes.
Notes
Softened butter is essential for this recipe, so make sure to take it out of the fridge early enough to come to room temperature.
Use high-quality powdered sugar that’s fresh and not lumpy, as it will affect the texture of the frosting.
Sift the powdered sugar to ensure it’s smooth and even.
Don’t over-add the milk or cream, as it’s easier to add more than it is to take it away.
Start with 2 tablespoons and add more as needed.
If using the frosting immediately, make sure it’s at room temperature to get the best results.
If refrigerating the frosting, allow it to come to room temperature before using it.
This frosting is perfect for topping cakes or cupcakes, but you can also use it to fill cakes or make cake decorations.
