Ready Time
20 mins
Yields
6 servings
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2-4 tablespoons whole milk or heavy cream
Instructions
In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer until it’s light and fluffy. Gradually add the powdered sugar to the bowl, beating continuously until smooth and creamy.
Add the vanilla extract and salt, beating until well combined.
Add the milk or heavy cream, starting with 2 tablespoons and adding more as needed, until you reach the desired consistency for your frosting. You want it to be smooth and spreadable, but not too thin.
Beat the frosting for an additional 2-3 minutes until it’s light and airy.
This will help incorporate air and give your frosting a beautiful texture. Use your frosting immediately, or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Bring to room temperature before using.
Notes
For a smaller batch of frosting, you can easily halve the ingredients.
Keep in mind that you may need to adjust the amount of milk or heavy cream accordingly.
If you find your frosting too thin, don’t panic! Just add a little more powdered sugar to balance it out.
On the other hand, if it’s too thick, add a tiny bit more milk or cream.
When colorizing your frosting, use high-quality food dyes or gels to ensure vibrant colors that don’t affect the frosting’s texture.
If you’re new to making frosting, don’t overbeat – this can lead to air pockets and a weird texture.
Stop beating once you’ve reached the desired consistency.
Experiment with different flavor extracts, like almond or coconut, to create unique taste combinations.
Remember to bring your frosting to room temperature before using it – this ensures it’s spreadable and easy to work with.
