Ready Time
1 hrs 45 mins
Yields
5 servings
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 cup pesto sauce
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 6 slices of cooked turkey bacon, crumbled
- 1/2 cup sliced red onion
- 1/2 cup sliced fresh mushrooms
- Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish
Instructions
Combine warm water and yeast in a large mixing bowl.
Let it sit for 5-7 minutes until yeast is activated and foamy.
Add flour, salt, and olive oil to the bowl.
Mix until a dough forms.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour or until doubled in size.
Preheat the oven to 425°F.
Punch down the dough and shape it into a rectangle or circle, depending on your preference.
Transfer the dough to a greased baking sheet or pizza stone.
Spread pesto sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a 1/2-inch border around the edges.
Top with shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheese.
Sprinkle crumbled turkey bacon, sliced red onion, and mushrooms over the cheese.
Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Remove from the oven and garnish with fresh cilantro leaves.
Slice and serve hot!
Notes
For a crisper crust, make sure the baking sheet or pizza stone is preheated in the oven for at least 5 minutes before adding the dough. You can also use homemade pesto sauce if you have it, or add some garlic for extra flavor.
Turkey bacon gives this flatbread a delicious smoky flavor, but you can substitute it with regular bacon if you prefer.
If you’re not a fan of mushrooms, feel free to swap them out with your favorite toppings – bell peppers, olives, or artichoke hearts all work well. Make sure to knead the dough long enough to develop the gluten, which will give your crust a nice chew.
To get a nice golden brown crust, bake the flatbread for an additional 2-3 minutes, keeping an eye on it to prevent burning.
