Southern Boiled Peanuts
Southern boiled peanuts, a beloved snack of the South! These addictive treats are worth the wait, with a tender, salty flavor that’s simply irresistible. Ingredients
- 1 pound raw peanuts
- 1 cup salt
- 1 gallon water
Instructions
Rinse the raw peanuts under cold running water, then drain well.
In a large pot, combine the peanuts and 1 cup of salt.
Add the gallon of water to the pot, making sure the peanuts are completely submerged.
Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 6-8 hours, or until the peanuts are tender.
Occasionally, skim off any foam that forms on the surface of the water.
After 6-8 hours, remove the pot from the heat and let the peanuts soak in the brine for at least 8 hours or overnight.
Once the peanuts have soaked, drain the liquid and rinse the peanuts under cold running water.
Spread the peanuts out in a single layer on paper towels to dry.
Let them air-dry for at least 2 hours before serving.
Divide the boiled peanuts into 9 equal servings and serve.
Notes
Be prepared to plan ahead, as the boiling and soaking process can take up to 18 hours.
You can also adjust the amount of salt to your taste, but keep in mind that it will affect the overall flavor of the peanuts.
If you don’t have a large pot, you can divide the ingredients in half and cook them in batches.
During the simmering process, you may need to add more water to the pot to keep the peanuts submerged.
When storing the boiled peanuts, make sure they’re completely dry to prevent mold from growing.
