Grandma VanDoren’s White Bread
This recipe is for a classic white bread that has been passed down in my family for generations. It’s perfect for toast, sandwiches, or just plain eating!
Ingredients
- 3 cups warm water
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 tablespoons vegetable oil
- ½ cup white sugar
- 8 cups bread flour
Instructions
In a large bowl, combine 3 cups warm water, 1 tablespoon active dry yeast, 1 teaspoon salt, 4 tablespoons vegetable oil, and ½ cup white sugar. Mix thoroughly and let sponge rise until doubled in size.
Gradually add about 4 cups flour to the mixture while kneading until smooth. Then place the dough in a greased bowl and turn several times to coat. Cover with a damp cloth and allow to rise until doubled.
Punch down the dough then let it rest for a few minutes before dividing into three equal parts. Shape into loaves and place in three 8 x 4½ inch greased bread pans letting them rise until almost doubled again.
Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius) for 35-45 minutes being sure to cover the loaves with foil during the last few minutes to prevent excess browning
