Ready Time

1 hrs

Yields

6 servings

Ingredients

  • 6-8 medium-sized apples, peeled and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

Mix until the apples are evenly coated with the dry ingredients.

Transfer the apple mixture to a 9×9-inch baking dish and set aside.

In another bowl, mix together the rolled oats, brown sugar, and cold butter until crumbly.

Be sure to use your fingers or a pastry blender to work the butter into the dry ingredients until it resembles coarse crumbs.

Spread the oat mixture evenly over the apple filling, making sure to cover the entire surface.

Bake the crisp for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.

Remove the crisp from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving warm.

Serve in individual portions and relish the delicious flavors of autumn!

Notes

Use a mix of sweet and tart apples, like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp, for a depth of flavor.

Make sure to not overmix the oat topping, as it can become tough and dense.

Use cold butter for the best results, as it’ll help create a crumbly topping.

Don’t be afraid to get in there with your fingers to work the butter into the dry ingredients – it’s the best way to get the right consistency! If you want an extra crispy topping, broil the crisp for an additional 2-3 minutes after baking.

Keep an eye on it to avoid burning! You can also make this crisp ahead of time and store it in the fridge for up to 24 hours before baking.

Leftovers can be stored at room temperature for up to 3 days, but be warned – it’s unlikely to last that long!
