Ready Time

1 hrs 10 mins

Yields

9 servings

Ingredients

  • 4 cups stale bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup Nutella
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the milk, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt until well combined.

Add the eggs one at a time, whisking well after each addition.

Stir in the vanilla extract.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted butter and Nutella until smooth.

Add the bread cubes to the milk mixture and let it sit for 10 minutes, until the bread is well coated.

Stir in the Nutella mixture until everything is fully incorporated.

Pour the mixture into a 9×13-inch baking dish and let it sit for 10 minutes to allow the bread to absorb the liquid.

Bake for 35-40 minutes or until puffed and set.

Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Slice into 9 pieces and serve warm.

Notes

Make sure to use stale bread for the best results, as it will soak up the liquid mixture better than fresh bread.

If you want a more intense chocolate flavor, you can add a little more cocoa powder or a handful of chocolate chips to the milk mixture.

Don’t overmix the Nutella and melted butter, or it’ll become too thick and difficult to stir into the bread mixture.

Letting the bread sit for 10 minutes is crucial to ensuring it’s well coated with the liquid, so be patient and don’t rush this step! The baking time might vary depending on your oven, so keep an eye on the pudding after 30 minutes and cover it with foil if the top starts to brown too quickly.

You can serve the pudding with whipped cream, chopped nuts, or even a scoop of ice cream for an extra-special treat.

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days, and reheated in the microwave or oven until warm and toasty.
