Yields

6 servings

Ingredients

  • 12-15 jalapeno peppers
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil spray

Instructions

Start by preparing the jalapeno peppers.

Rinse them under cold water, pat them dry with paper towels, and slice them into 1/4-inch thick rounds.

Remove any seeds or membranes for less heat.

In a shallow dish, mix together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using).

Pour the buttermilk into a separate shallow dish.

Dip each jalapeno slice into the buttermilk, coating both sides, then roll them in the flour mixture, pressing the coating onto the pepper to adhere.

Place the coated jalapeno slice on a plate or tray.

Repeat the dipping and coating process with the remaining jalapeno slices.

Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C).

Spray the basket with vegetable oil spray to prevent sticking.

In batches, place the coated jalapeno slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket.

You may need to cook them in 2-3 batches depending on the size of your air fryer.

Cook the jalapeno slices for 5-7 minutes or until they’re crispy and golden brown, shaking the basket halfway through.

Remove the crispy jalapeno slices from the air fryer and serve hot.

Repeat the cooking process with the remaining batches.

Notes

For an extra crispy coating, make sure the jalapeno slices are completely dry before coating. If you find the coating isn’t adhering well, try chilling the coated slices in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before air frying.

Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket, cooking in batches is key to achieving crunchy jalapeno slices.

To minimize heat, remove the seeds and membranes from the jalapeno peppers. For an extra kick, keep them in or add more cayenne pepper to the flour mixture.

Store leftover crunchy jalapeno slices in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Simply reheated them in the air fryer at 400°F (200°C) for 2-3 minutes to crisp them up again. You can also customize the flavor of the crunchy jalapeno slices by adding different seasonings to the flour mixture, such as dried oregano, thyme, or smoked paprika.
