Ready Time

2 hrs

Yields

6 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup of sugar
  • 1/4 cup of warm water
  • 1/4 teaspoon of active dry yeast
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of orange zest
  • 1/4 cup of unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon of orange extract
  • Confectioners’ sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and yeast.

Whisk the mixture together until it’s well combined.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the warm water, melted butter, egg, orange zest, and orange extract.

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a smooth dough forms.

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Punch down the dough and divide it into 6 equal pieces.

Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten it slightly into a disk shape.

Place the disks onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch of space between each bun.

Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes, or until they’re golden brown.

Remove the buns from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack for 5 minutes.

Dust the buns with confectioners’ sugar, if desired.

Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

Make sure to use warm water for the yeast to activate properly. All-purpose flour is essential for the right texture, don’t substitute it with bread flour.

Orange zest and extract give a beautiful citrus flavor, don’t skip them.

Melted butter should be slightly cooled before adding to the wet ingredients. Don’t overmix the dough, it should still be slightly sticky.

Let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free place for the best results.

If you find the dough too sticky, add a little more flour. For an extra crispy crust, bake the buns for 17-18 minutes.

You can also toast the buns before serving for a crisper texture.
