These Italian Chocolate Cookies are soft, chewy and full of chocolate flavor. They are easy to make and can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¾ cup white sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • ⅓ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ½ cup chopped walnuts 2 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate 1 tablespoon butter, softened 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups confectioners’ sugar ¼ cup hot milk

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius).

2. Sift 3 cups of flour twice using a sifter. In a large bowl, mix together the sifted flour, baking powder, white sugar and cocoa powder until everything is evenly combined.

3. Cream 1 cup of butter or margarine with an electric mixer until it is light and fluffy, then blend it into the flour mixture from Step 2 until everything is well combined.

4. Add 1/3 cup milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and chopped walnuts to the dough from Step 3 and mix thoroughly by hand until everything is well blended (the dough should be the consistency of pie crust but not sticky).

5. For each cookie, pinch off about 1 teaspoon’s worth of dough and roll it into a ball by hand that is approximately one inch in diameter before placing it on a greased baking sheet – do not flatten them out beforehand!

6. Bake for 10 minutes or until lightly browned before removing from baking sheets; cool on racks for at least 5 minutes before proceeding to next step.

What is the spice in Italian cookies?

Tetù cookies are a type of rich, dense chocolate cookie that is traditionally flavored with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and orange zest. These cookies are typically prepared on All Saint’s Day (November 1st) in Sicily or during the Christmas holidays in North America.

The combination of spices used to flavor Tetù cookies varies depending on the region where they are being made. However, some of the most common spices used include cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and orange zest. Each of these spices provides its own unique flavor profile that helps to create the signature taste of Tetù cookies.

Cinnamon is one of the most popular spices used in baking and gives these cookies a warm, sweet flavor. Cloves add a touch of sweetness along with a slightly spicy flavor profile. Nutmeg brings out the natural sweetness of the chocolate while also adding a bit of depth and warmth to the overall flavor. Finally, orange zest adds a bright citrusy note that balances out the other flavors perfectly.

When it comes to Italian cookies, there is no definitive answer as to what spice is used as each region has their own traditional recipes that vary slightly. However, we can narrow it down to four common spices: cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and orange zest.

What spices are good in cookies?

There are a few spices that work well in cookies. Cinnamon is one of the most popular choices because it pairs well with both sweet and savory flavors.
