Easy Homemade Berry Syrup

Ingredients

  • 2 cups mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or any combination of your choice)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

Rinse the berries and pick out any stems or debris. In a medium-sized pot, combine the berries and granulated sugar.

Let it sit for about 15 minutes, until the berries start to release their juice and the mixture becomes syrupy.

Add in the water to the pot, and bring the mixture to a boil over high heat, stirring occasionally. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the syrup has thickened slightly and the fruit has broken down.

Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the solids.

Discard the solids or save them for another use, like adding to oatmeal or yogurt. Let the syrup cool, then store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

You can also freeze the syrup for up to 6 months and thaw it in the fridge when you’re ready to use it.

Notes

Use any combination of your favorite berries, or try a single-berry syrup for a unique flavor. For a clearer syrup, be sure to strain it thoroughly to remove all the solids.

You can adjust the amount of sugar to your taste – if you prefer a less sweet syrup, start with 3/4 cup of sugar and add more to taste.

Store leftover berries from the straining process in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week and use in oatmeal, yogurt, or as a topping for ice cream. Experiment with spices like cinnamon or nutmeg to create a unique flavor profile.

Freeze the syrup in ice cube trays for a convenient addition to cocktails or sparkling water.
