Ready Time
30 mins
Yields
10 servings
Ingredients
- 2-3 large apples, peeled and sliced
- 1/2 cup vegan butter or margarine
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
Instructions
In a large skillet, melt the vegan butter or margarine over medium heat.
Add the sliced apples to the skillet and cook for about 10-12 minutes, or until they start to soften.
In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and ground cloves.
Sprinkle the sugar mixture evenly over the apples in the skillet, making sure they’re all coated.
Continue cooking for another 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and caramelized.
Remove the skillet from the heat and let it cool slightly before serving.
Serve warm and devour!
Notes
Use any combination of apple varieties you like, but firmer apples like Granny Smith hold their shape best.
Since these apples are best served warm, consider making them just before serving or reheating them in the microwave or oven if made ahead of time.
You can adjust the amount of spices to your taste, but the ground cloves add a unique depth of flavor, so don’t be tempted to omit them! This recipe makes a big batch of apples, perfect for a large gathering or party, but you can easily halve the ingredients for a smaller group.
Don’t overcrowd the skillet – cook the apples in batches if necessary, so they have enough room to cook evenly and get that beautiful caramelization.
