Yields
6 servings
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground turkey
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 1 medium bell pepper, diced
- 1 jalapeño pepper, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 6 tacos shells
- 1 ripe avocado, diced
- 1 lime, cut into wedges
- Salt, to taste
- Optional toppings: diced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, diced red onion, sour cream, shredded cheese, cilantro
Instructions
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the diced onion, bell pepper, and jalapeño.
Cook until the vegetables are tender, about 5-7 minutes.
Add the garlic, cumin, chili powder, paprika, and cayenne pepper to the skillet. Cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
Add the ground turkey to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks, until it’s no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.
Season with salt and pepper to taste. Warm the tacos shells according to the package instructions.
Assemble the tacos by spooning the turkey mixture into the shells, followed by diced avocado.
Serve with lime wedges and your choice of optional toppings.
Notes
Use 93% lean ground turkey for a healthier option, but keep in mind it might be slightly dry. If you prefer juicier tacos, go for 80% lean or even 70% lean.
Adjust the amount of cayenne pepper according to your desired level of spiciness.
If you’re not a fan of heat, omit it altogether or substitute with smoked paprika for a smoky flavor. For an extra boost of flavor, add a squeeze of fresh lime juice to the turkey mixture while it’s cooking.
Don’t overfill your tacos shells, as this can make them prone to breaking.
Start with a small amount of turkey mixture and add more to taste. Serve immediately to ensure the avocado stays fresh and creamy.
Consider toasting the tacos shells in the oven for a few minutes to crisp them up before filling.
