Ingredients

  • 1 cup pitted dates
  • 1 cup pitted prunes
  • 1 cup chopped raisins
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup margarine
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (180 degrees Celsius).

2. Cut dates and prunes into small pieces. Boil date, prune, raisin, and water mixture for 5 minutes. Add margarine and mix well, then set mixture aside to cool.

3. In a separate bowl, mix together eggs, vanilla extract, and chopped nuts. Add this mixture to the cooled fruit mixture from step 2.

4. Sift flour, baking soda, and salt into the wet ingredients from step 3. If you want a spicy bar add 1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg to the dry ingredients at this point as well (optional). Mix everything together until it is fully incorporated – batter should be thick but smooth.

5. Pour batter into a 7 x 11-inch pan that has been greased or lined with parchment paper/aluminum foil. Bake in preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown on top. Let cool completely before cutting into bars or squares.
