Glorified Gingerbread

A holiday favorite, this cake is a must-have for any gingerbread fan. It’s a moist and flavorful cake that’s easy to make and even easier to eat!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup white sugar, ½ cup shortening, 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, ½ teaspoon ground cloves, ½ teaspoon salt, 2 tablespoons molasses, 1 egg, 1 teaspoon baking soda dissolved in 1 tablespoon hot water, 1 cup buttermilk

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

2. In a large bowl, mix together sugar, shortening, flour, spices, and salt as for pie crust.

3. Divide dough in half and set aside.

4. To one half of the dough, add molasses, egg, baking soda dissolved in water, and buttermilk. Mix well.

5. Pour mixture into a greased 9 inch square pan.

6. Sprinkle the other half of the dough over mixture in the pan.

7Bake for 30 minutes at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

8 Cool in pan and then cut into bars
