Challah French Toast

This Challah French Toast recipe is my go-to whenever I’m in the mood for a cozy breakfast. The rich, eggy bread soaks up the custard beautifully, and the end result is crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Serve with your favorite toppings (I like berries and maple syrup) and enjoy!


  • 4 eggs, 1 cup buttermilk, 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/8 tsp nutmeg, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 4 tbsp butter, 8 slices challah bread, powdered sugar


1. In an 8×8 or 9×9 baking dish, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, milk, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla.

2. Place one slice of challah into the egg mixture and let soak for 30 seconds. Gently flip and let soak for another 30 seconds.

3. In a large (12-inch) nonstick skillet, melt 2 tablespoons butter over medium heat.

4. Use a pair of forks to lift out a slice of challah from the egg mixture and transfer to skillet. Repeat with 3 more slices (you’ll cook 4 at once).

5. Cook French toast until golden brown and cooked through; flip halfway through cooking (about 6 minutes total). Transfer to serving plates when done cooking each batch..

6 Serve warm with powdered sugar, maple syrup and sliced bananas or berries
