Yields

6 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 sticks of unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cups biscuit or croissant dough, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 6-8 Granny Smith apples, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
  • Confectioners’ sugar, for dusting

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F.

In a large bowl, whisk together the softened butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and caramel sauce until smooth.

Beat in the eggs until well combined, then stir in the baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

Set the mixture aside.

In a separate bowl, whisk the heavy cream until it’s light and fluffy.

In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, create a layer of the biscuit or croissant dough pieces.

You can trim them to fit the dish if needed.

Drizzle half of the cream over the dough, followed by half of the caramel mixture.

Sprinkle with half of the apple pieces.

Repeat the layers, starting with the dough, then the cream, the caramel mixture, and finally the remaining apple pieces.

Cover the dish with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until the dough has doubled in size.

Remove the cover and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

Remove the dish from the oven and let it cool for 10-15 minutes.

Dust with confectioners’ sugar before serving.

Notes

Make sure to use high-quality caramel sauce for the best flavor. You can also use leftover caramel sauce from a previous recipe or store-bought caramel sauce.

For the biscuit or croissant dough, you can use homemade or store-bought.

If using homemade, make sure it’s at room temperature before cutting it into pieces. Don’t overmix the caramel mixture, as it can become too thick and difficult to work with.

When assembling the layers, try to distribute the ingredients evenly to ensure each bite has a good balance of flavors.

Letting the dough rise for about an hour will give it a nice, fluffy texture. You can also let it rise for a shorter time if you’re in a hurry, but the result might be slightly different.

Keep an eye on the monkey bread while it’s baking, as the top can brown quickly.

You can cover it with foil if it starts to get too brown. Let the monkey bread cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving.

This will help the caramel sauce to set and the bread to hold its shape.

You can serve the caramel apple monkey bread warm or at room temperature. It’s perfect for brunch or as a sweet treat any time of the day.

You can also customize this recipe by adding other ingredients, such as chopped nuts or cinnamon sugar on top of the monkey bread before baking.
