Yields

8 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 cup of ketchup
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon of chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Shredded cheese, for serving (optional)
  • Chopped fresh cilantro, for serving (optional)

Instructions

In a large skillet, cook the ground turkey over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks, until it’s no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet and cook until the onion is translucent, about 5 minutes.

In a small bowl, whisk together the ketchup, water, brown sugar, smoked paprika, chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper.

Pour the mixture over the turkey mixture in the skillet. Stir everything together.

Bring the mixture to a simmer and let cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the flavors have melded together and the sauce has thickened slightly.

Split the hamburger buns in half and place them in the oven at 350°F for a few minutes to toast. Spoon the turkey mixture onto the buns and top with shredded cheese and chopped cilantro, if desired.

Notes

You can use 93% lean ground turkey or even 85% lean if you prefer a bit more fat for extra flavor.

Don’t overcook the turkey or it’ll be dry.

For a spicy kick, add diced jalapeños or serrano peppers to the skillet with the onion and garlic.

If using cheese, sprinkle it on top of the turkey mixture before serving so it gets all melty.

You can also serve with pickle slices, diced onions, or sliced jalapeños for extra flavor.

These sloppy joes freeze well, so feel free to make a double batch and store it in airtight containers for up to 3 months.
